What exactly is an agent skill (SKILL.md)?

An agent skill is an instruction file in the official Anthropic format that teaches your AI agent (Claude Code or Claude.ai) how to behave in a specific context - like a code review expert, a writing editor, or a research assistant. Once installed, the agent loads it automatically whenever it's relevant, no manual prompting needed.

Where does a SKILL.md file work?

Skills work in Claude Code (the CLI and IDE extension), Claude.ai, and GitHub Copilot. Drop the file in your Claude Code skills directory (~/.claude/skills/) and it's picked up automatically.
